Gràcia District
In the old village of Gracia are Street Carolinas, a designation that despite appearances not of any girl or girls so called, if not two small states of the Pacific Ocean known today as Micronesia and Palau and remind us of the English imperial past.
The islands were discovered in 1526 by the explorer Alonso de Salazar Toribio. In 1686 they became part of the empire under the name of the Carolinas in honor of the then King of Spain, Charles II "bewitched."
In the nineteenth century, the archipelago of The Carolinas was considered theoretically and possession English, but in practice have never reached a settlement and permanent occupation in them, which caused a territorial dispute with Germany , interested in seizing power in the islands.
The conflict called the "Crisis of the Carolinas" no place in war after the mediation of Pope Leo XIII, who ruled in favor of Spain.
After the war of 1899 against the United States , in which Spain lost Cuba, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam, The Carolinas were sold to Germany for 25 million pesetas .
March 17 1908 and the disaster of the war in Cuba still very young, it was decided to recall the former English colony, renaming a street northwest of the town of Gràcia with the name of the Carolinas.
During the twentieth century the islands were controlled German, Japanese and American finally, after becoming a theater of war during World War II. Between 1986 and 1994 were no longer administered by the U.S. and formed themselves into independent states of Micronesia and Palau, now transformed idyllic tourist destinations.
