A Franciscan named Maria del Carmen Gonzalez created in 1884 the religious congregation of "The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart" with the aim of helping children, disabled and elderly patients.
Maria del Carmen itself moved to Barcelona in 1892 to found the "Obra Social Benefit of the Christ Child" designed to overcome the many deficiencies that had abandoned children and poor of the city in the late nineteenth century. The work was in charge of a kindergarten in the modest neighborhood of Raval and a small hospital in the Pasaje Mercader near Balmes Street.
In 1923 The work had grown enough to move to a larger venue. Thus was born the Christ Child Homeopathic Hospital located in a building at the intersection of Mallorca Street and Dos de Mayo.
worked regularly until 2008 when building a new modern hospital at Paseo Maragall opened in December of that year by Cardinal Lluis Martinez Sistach Barcelona. As had happened since early last century, the local former was too small and outdated for the needs of the Work.
